SINING GALING
September 26, 2008
Ateneo de Manila - Grade School

Ms. Ma. Theresa D. Cruz is currently the Subject Area Coordinator of Art at the Ateneo Grade School. She finished Fine Arts major in Interior Design at the University of Santo Tomas, 1987and she has Master units in Basic Education at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Every year, the Ateneo De Manila Grade School celebrates the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. For this year 2008, it was a 3-day memorable occasion from September 25 to 27. As always there were all sorts of rides, games and other recreation to satisfy the energies of the young and the not-so-young – there is the Ferris Wheel, Octopus, Caterpillar, Dino Plane, Inflatables, Horror-House (Kubol ng Katatakutan) and game booths. Among its special events were the band fest, singing contest and the Sining Galing 2008, an art contest participated by 51 Middle school students each representing their classes.

Sining Galing started even before the school year of 1995 in which its proponents were the Parents Auxiliary Council of Grade five. By the year 2002, its sponsorship was handed down to the Art Department. Since then, it has been a special event which the students look forward to every Fiesta.

Sining Galing 2008 took place last September 26, 2008. There were two categories for the contest: category A, which consists of grades 4 and 5 participants and category B for grades 6 and 7 participants. The medium used for category A was colored marker on paper while category B was oil pastels on felt paper. The students were given one and a half hour for their artwork to interpret the theme ‘Tradisyon at Kapistahan, Mga Anghel ay Parangalan’ conceptualized by Mr. Fred T. Laureles, a grade school teacher. The theme has always been in consonance with the Fiesta.

Among the panel of distinguished judges were: MRS. ZENAIDA XAVIER, former President of the Philippine Art Educators Association and former Subject Area Coordinator in Art at the Ateneo de Manila Grade School, MR. FERNANDO SENA, renowned painter and art educator for children and MR. JON VALENZUELA, active member of the Philippine Art Educators Association and art educator at Xavier School.

All participants received a merit award, certificate of participation and a set of art materials. Three winners were chosen for each category: 1st prize, 2nd prize and 3rd prize. Aside from earning a bag of art materials, the winners will be awarded a special plaque where their artwork will be superimposed or printed on it. The winners are as follows:
